New rules for energy efficiency
From 1 January 2013, new rules for energy efficiency for ships larger than 400 GT named in MARPOL Annex VI, Chapter 4. The new rules are in Resolution MEPC.203 (62) of the IMO and come on top of the already existing rules MARPOL Annex VI. The rules require a new certificate: the International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) that is emitted when a Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) is on board.
New certificate: International Energy Efficiency Certificate
The new International Energy Efficiency Certificate (IEEC) is required for new and existing ships to which the new chapter 4 of MARPOL Annex VI is in force. For newbuildings it shall be issued at the initial survey before the ship comes into service and for existing ships of 400 GT or more at the intermediate or renewal survey.
The IEEC remains valid for the lifetime of the ship, the ship is specific and must be on board during inspections and audits.
