TX-65 'Bona Fide', designed for sustainable shrimp fishing, underway.

A milestone in modern fishing vessel design

With the delivery of the TX-65 Bona Fide, a significant milestone was achieved: for the first time in decades, a shrimp trawler was fully built on Urk. Commissioned by Texel fisherman Erik Kalf and constructed under the leadership of the Fishery Cooperative Urk (VCU), the vessel was designed by Naval Consultant Herman Jansen. In early August, the TX-65 officially entered service — a proud result of craftsmanship, modern technology, and a forward-looking design philosophy.

Design and construction on Urk

The TX-65 is based on the successful concept of the WR-40, also developed by Naval Consultant Herman Jansen, but specifically adapted to the owner's requirements: more space in the engine room and on deck for improved operational efficiency. Measuring 24 meters in length and 6.20 meters in beam, the vessel features an optimized hull shape, providing excellent stability and minimal draft — essential characteristics for shrimp fishing.

The hull and complete outfitting were realized entirely on Urk, with nearly all suppliers located within a 500-meter radius of VCU. Thanks to the close collaboration with partners such as Piet Brouwer Electrotechnology, Marble Automation, De Flux, and De Boer RVS, the TX-65 reflects the high standards and rich tradition of Dutch fishing vessel construction.

Built for the future

The TX-65’s design focuses strongly on sustainability, noise reduction, and hygiene. The vessel meets strict HACCP standards, with smooth stainless steel work decks that allow easy cleaning and guarantee food safety. Special techniques, including anti-drumming treatments, ensure an exceptionally quiet working environment — a major benefit for crew comfort.

Propulsion and energy systems are provided by Caterpillar engines, and the TX-65 is fully prepared for future developments such as pulse fishing and onboard freezing installations. This combination of traditional fishing practices and modern technology perfectly aligns with the forward-thinking approach of both the owner and the design bureau.

A project of craftsmanship and collaboration

Although the construction of the TX-65 was marked by personal loss for the owner, the vessel stands as a symbol of perseverance, collaboration, and innovation. In close cooperation with Erik Kalf and VCU, Naval Consultant Herman Jansen — under the leadership of Hernand Jansen — has realized a modern shrimp trawler that sets new standards within the sector.
